Che Brigade Fundraiser!
On Friday March 26th, people young and old came to the Chilean Housing Coop to a fundraiser party organized by Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC). The evening helped raise money for people to be able to go on the 2010 Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade to Cuba.
Tamara Hansen, MC, Coordinator of VCSC and the National Coordinator of the Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade to Cuba opened the night through slides of the adventures and experiences of the brigadistas who went to Cuba last summer.
After Tamara, Max Tennant, organizer with VCSC and last year brigadista passionately read his own poetry that was inspired by his experience traveling in Cuba. Then Shakeel Lochan, also organizer with VCSC and last year brigadista invoked in people’s mind through his own poetry an image of his experience in Cuba and the good example that Cuba represents for the rest of the world. As well, Shakeel read his poem on the injustice but also heroism of Five Cuban Men held in US prisons for almost 12 years for investigating terrorist organizations operating freely in Miami. For more information on the case of the Cuban 5 check out http://www.vancubasolidarity.com/freethefivevan.html.
Joaquin Ernesto, talented Vancouver musician and director of the Festival Internacional de Trova en Vancouver 2010 soothed everyone with his guitar, playing beautiful romantic and Latin American music. Skillful DJ No’Tenojes spun international beats from around the world with everyone dancing for the rest of the night.
Everyone was excited to have a good time and be able to raise money for this year’s Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade to Cuba.
