Monthly Cuba Cultural Night, a campaign to bring the culture of Cuba to Vancouver!

To start of the month of April, Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba organized their monthly Cuban Cultural & Film Night. The night was filled with exciting line performers, poets, etc. The program this time was a little different from previous cultural nights, the night was featuring a open mic, with the theme “How I learned about Cuba”. There were over 55 people that filled the room of Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House.

The evening was welcomed by Tamara Hansen who is the coordinator of Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba and is also the co-chair of Canadian Network on Cuba.

Tamara started the night off by getting people thrilled to have delicious Latin America food. Everyone was at the go when Tamara introduced the open mic for anyone that was interested of sharing how they learned about Cuba.

A wide variety of people that shard their love for the country, just to name a few the program consisted of salsa/ballet dancing by Janine Solanki who is the co chair of Mobilization Against War and Occupation. Luis, a wonderful poet from El Salvador, he read some of his beautiful poetry. Lance who shared his experience on the Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade. Seonaid who shared some of her soulful acceppla songs.

The exciting film that showed was “Viva Cuba” is about the friendship between two Cuban children which is threatened by their parents’ differences. To save their friendship they embark on a journey across the island. Everyone that was there enjoyed film, from tears to laughter and just plain smiling waved across people’s faces throughout the room. To end off the night, raffle tickets buyers waited to see if their ticket won them something from our raffle table and to see who would walk off with the Havana Club.
