Monthly Cuba Cultural-Film Night, a campaign to bring the culture of Cuba to Vancouver! On Friday February 6th, over 40 people gathered and participated in Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba’s (VCSC) Monthly Cuban Cultural & Film Night at the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House in Vancouver. The night’s film was “Clandestinos” a classic Cuban film centered on a love affair between two young Cubans fighting in the underground movement against the dictatorship Fulgencio Batista in the 1950's. Tamara Hansen, the coordinator of VCSC and also a co-chair of the Canadian Network on Cuba, opened the evening by welcoming everyone. After getting seated with their delicious meals the crowd was ready to learn more about the evening’s program. Tamara then welcomed Luis Velasquez, a wonderful poet from El Salvador and great supporter of VCSC; he read some of his beautiful poetry. Up next to the mic was Shakeel Lochan, an organizer with Mobilization Against War & Occupation and fabulous poet, his powerful words left people wishing he’d written more. The audience was then taken away by Joaquin Ernesto, a fantastic musician and host of Coop Radio’s “Romantic Tango”. When Joaquin took the stage, the crowd sang along to his beautiful love songs and soulful songs from the struggles of Latin America. The 3rd talented poet of the evening was Delia Ochoa, originally from Guatemala and a member of the Solidarity Coalition for United Latin America. The last live performer was the always passionate Alfonzo Valle, he performed 2 great numbers for the crowd and left everyone with a smile on their faces. Once the live performances had come to a close and everyone has feeling full after a great meal, the main feature of the evening “Clandestinos” began. This great but tragic love story about young lovers with a passion for revolution and each other, hit many people very close to the heart.
