On Saturday Sept 9th, stories and images of Cuba filled the Mt Pleasant Neighborhood House. Over 55 people listened and learned to what 10 young activists learned during their summer in Cuba.

These young activists spent about a month this last summer travelling and working with Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba and the Che Guevara Work Brigade.

Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba organized "What We Saw and Learned in Cuba" to give a space for the Caravanistas and the Brigadistas to share their experiences in Cuba.

The event was MC'd by VCSC member Jo, who set the tone with her own exciting experiences travelling to Cuba on her own this summer.

The program was opened by Noah Fine and Nicole Burton (who traveled with the Che Brigade and the Pastors for Peace Caravan, respectively). They gave an overview of their travels and explained the important work of the two organizations in defending Cuba.

Throughout the night the other eight travellers - Polina Ivanova, Kira Koshelanyk, Sophie Ziner, Nita Palmer, Lindsay Clarke, Alison Bodine, Tamara Hansen and Jane Ivanova - showed slides of their excursions and spoke about what they learned of the history of Cuba, gains Cuba has made and democracy in Cuba. They gave inspiring and funny anecdotes of their travels and shared the knowledge that they had gained.

The evening was wrapped up with a discussion and the many questions could have gone on through the night, as people lingered to talk in the corridor following the event.

"What We Saw and Learned in Cuba" was an excellent account of what Cuba is today, with its challenges, gains, struggles and victories. The event was sure to inspire more travellers for 2007!
