LOVE FOR CUBA SPREADING OUT IN VANCOUVER WITH
ERNESTO CHE GUEVARA VOLUNTEER WORK BRIGADE

On March 4, 2012 Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC) organized an afternoon event to bring together people from across Vancouver and the lower mainland who had expressed interest in traveling to Cuba for the 20th anniversary of the Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade. The event was opened by MCs Tamara Hansen, Coordinator of VCSC and 7-time Brigadista, along with Noah Fine, coordinator of the Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver and 5-time Brigadista. With 35 people in attendance, the meeting began with a review of the 2012 program. Highlights for this year’s trip include: volunteer work alongside Cubans; participation in the May 1st International Workers’ Day March in Holguin; participation in the Romerias de Mayo cultural festival in Holguin; visiting the Moncada (former army barracks, now museum); visits with the Cuban Federation of Women, Federation of University students, hospitals and a school; free time to wander Holguin and Camaguey; and of course we cannot forget visits to Cuba’s famous beaches.

After reviewing the fantastic 2012 Che Brigade highlights, there was a short video presentation of, “Cuba Authentica” and a multi-media presentation with photos from the 2010 Che Brigade. The event then flowed into a question and answer period with Tamara and Noah answering a multitude of questions from the cost of the trip to what clothes to bring. At the end of the event 3 people confirmed they had all registered for the Che Brigade and 15 expressed that they were hoping to register in the coming weeks. Still others expressed wanting to come on the 2013 Che Brigade. Before leaving, many people spent some time together chatting about plans to travel to Cuba and enjoying some delicious coffee from Joe’s Café.
